LECTURE (1 HSW)
January 30, 5:30-8:00pm
@ AIA San Francisco, 130 Sutter Street
The lecture will be an introduction to biomimicry by Dr. Dayna Baumeister and will serve as the introduction to the workshop the next day. The lecture will begin at 6pm and will be followed by light refreshments. The lecture will be held at AIA San Francisco, at the Hallidie Building at 130 Sutter Street. WORKSHOP (7 HSWs)
January 31, 8:30am-5:30pm
@ The Pacific Energy Center, 851 Howard Street
The day-long workshop will involve hands-on exercises in small groups. Participants will spend some part of the day outdoors. Materials, lunch, and refreshments are included in the fee. Workshop participants must attend the evening lecture, which is the introduction to the subject of biomimicry; this material will not be repeated at the workshop. The workshop will be held at the Pacific Energy Center at 851 Howard Street.
BIOMIMCRY (from bios, life, and mimesis, imitate) is a new discipline that studies nature's best ideas and then imitates these designs and processes to solve human problems. Biomimetic applications range widely from product design, engineering, and architecture to software development, communication systems and organizational evolution. Broad reaching biological principles are as applicable to design challenges as specialized biological forms and processes.
Janine Benyus shared the stories of individuals doing biomimetic work around the world in several fields in her 1997 book Biomimcry: Innovation Inspired by Nature. Soon after, Janine and Dayna Baumeister, PhD, founded the Biomimicry Guild. Today, the Biomimicry Guild consists of a networked team of design-savvy biologists who teach technical audiences an evolving methodology that incorporates nature's design strategies into the design process. This intermingling has the potential to produce innovative, life-enhancing products, architecture, and communities. Following 3.8 billion years of R&D, nature can suggest what works, what is appropriate, what lasts.
AIA Committee on the Environment is sponsoring the first in a series of hands-on, regionally relevant workshops for architects and others who want to explore the language and possibilities of biomimicry and its application to the built environment. AIA COTE is proud to present a journey of discovery beginning with an evening lecture followed by a full-day workshop provided by the Biomimicry Guild.
A portion of the proceeds will go to Save The Bay, a Bay Area habitat conservation organization. Travel emissions will be offset through www.my-climate.org or www.greentagusa.org.
AIA COTE encourages voluntary offsetting by workshop participants as appropriate.
