In order to succeed in today's niche-focused consumer controlled environment advertising must entertain, inform and add value to the medium. Ultimately, pull media (RSS, Podcasting) is the next generation of content delivery while the explosion in consumer-generated content (Blogging) is quickly becoming a more influential and a bigger slice of the media landscape.
There are three factors driving the momentum of consumer controlled media:
1. Rising Usage of RSS by consumers as a standard method of consuming information.
2. Tremendous growth of the iPod, Podcasting and Tivo.
3. Ramp in creation of Blogs and other user-generated content.
RSS is still only recognized by less than 10% of the Internet consumer population, but that's by no means an indicator of its potential for publishers, marketers and most importantly, consumers.
