The IEEE Power & Energy Society (recently renamed from the Power Engineering Society) or PES is the oldest society in IEEE and consists of 21,550 members. Hampton Roads is home to 169 of those members. The fields of interest in this society are in the research, development, installation and operation of systems for the generation, transmission, distribution, measurement and control of electric energy. PES provides the world’s largest forum for sharing the latest in technological developments in the electric power industry and for creating standards for the development and construction of equipment and systems.

Power demands have been mounting around the world. U.S. electricity consumption, for example, has been growing 10 percent per year, while investment in electrical infrastructure has been moving in the other direction, decreasing 5 percent annually. Today’s aging power plants and old technology have managed to handle the rise in demand, but utilities face new challenges including possible greenhouse-gas limits, heightened security, skyrocketing fuel costs, and potential fuel shortages. Simply expanding the existing infrastructure is no longer enough.

Mr. Adeeb Hamzey will be presenting an overview of the current issues in the power industry. Mr. Hamzey is a project engineer for Dominion, Fossil and Hydro Engineering department, and has twenty nine years experience in the electric utility business. He has worked in T&D substation design, system operation, technical training, and fossil & hydro generation. Adeeb’s involvement with IEEE began when he was a student branch member at the Ohio State University, in 1978. He served in all elected offices of the IEEE Richmond Virginia Section. He is the immediate past chair of the Virginia Council of IEEE. He co-chaired the SoutheastCon 2007, Richmond, Virginia. At the IEEE-USA regional level, Adeeb is currently serving as Region 3 Professional Activities Coordinator. Also, he served as chairman of the Career Maintenance and Development Committee of the IEEE-USA, now, Employment and Career Services Committee. Adeeb facilitated several Careers Phase II and Career Transition Seminars and was speaker at Professional Development Seminars at various sections of IEEE-USA and at the Annual Meetings. Adeeb and his family call Goochland, Virginia, their home.
