Classroom Culture and Achievement:
How to Maintain High Academic Expectations While Making Classrooms Joyful

Jabali Sawicki, Head of School, Excellence Boys Charter School of Bedford Stuyvesant

This workshop presents how to have a classroom where joy promotes achievement and rigor promotes joy.  Participants will observe footage of classrooms from some of the highest performing urban schools in the country and dissect the specific techniques being used to create both joy and rigor.  The workshop will expose participants to strategies they can use in their own classrooms that will promote student achievement while also creating positive classroom culture and high student investment.

Jabali Sawicki is the Head of School at Excellence Boys. Prior to joining Excellence Boys, Mr. Sawicki taught Science at Roxbury Preparatory Charter School in Boston, MA. There, he played a central role in implementing the school's academic program while founding a support group for boys and a competitive soccer program. Mr. Sawicki is a 2003 KIPP Fisher Fellow. He graduated from Oberlin College, where he received a dual degree in Biology and Philosophy, and received an M.A. in Educational Administration from Columbia University Teachers College.
