Writing the Right Way: How to Build Fundamental Writing Skills with Early Elementary Students Aja Settles, Hollyhock Fellow for Instructional Leadership, North Star Academy Juliana Worrell, Lead Kindergarten Teacher, North Star Academy - Vailsburg Campus Elementary School To be able to ensure our children's academic success, teachers must be able to effectively teach the writing process to early elementary students. Presenters model for teachers several strategies that they use in the classroom to set their K, 1st, and 2nd grade students on the college-bound path. This workshop will allow participants to learn how to combine handwriting, shared writing, and kid writing to dramatically advance their students' writing skills. Participants will observe how to implement the writing process for a classroom of students and will benefit from a resource packet of materials to take wil them into their own classrooms. Aja Settles (Hollyhock Instructional Fellow, Second Grade Instructional Leader) joined North Star in 2007 after teaching for three years as a Teach for America corps member in Camden, NJ. She received her B.A. in Sociology from Temple University. Juliana Worrell (Kindergarten Lead Teacher and Grade Level Leader) comes to North Star after completing two years with Teach For America where she was an elementary teacher at Dr. Martin Luther King Elementary School here in Newark. She attended Rutgers University, where she received her BA in Political Science with a minor in Africana Studies
