Learning Through Entertainment: Skills Training with Serious Games Speaker: Stephen R. Balzac, 7 Steps Ahead Event Description: Games are used in many cultures to teach and practice a variety of skills important to that culture. The tournaments of the King Arthur stories were serious games designed to maintain martial skills in peacetime. Modern sports are the present day incarnation of the serious games of the past: fencing, kendo, judo, gymnastics, and pentathlon, to name a few. Now, however, sword fighting in a corporate boardroom is viewed as extremely declassee. The serious games of today need to focus on a different set of skills: leadership, negotiation, public speaking, improvisation, persuasion, decision making with incomplete information, and remaining calm under pressure. Like its predecessors, the modern serious game needs to fully involve participants. This presentation will demonstrate an example of a modern, serious game. It will be an experiential activity: participants will have the opportunity to take part in a serious game that is both entertaining and emphasizes leadership and negotiation skills. Following the game, we will examine and learn from the success or failure of the strategies we have employed. Participants will: - learn how other people react to their leadership style
- become more cognizant of the nature and types of mistakes made when under pressure
- learn to recognize key obstacles to developing trust in a business environment
- practice making decisions with incomplete or conflicting information
- will become more effective speakers and negotiators
