Checking for Understanding: How to Gauge Student Progress
James Verrilli, Co-Founder and Principal, North Star Academy Downtown Campus Middle School
The difference between "I taught this" and "The students learned this" can be hard to decipher for even the best teachers. Through effective checking for understanding, teachers are better able to re-teach to improve comprehension and increase student performance.  This workshop models numerous ways to check for understanding and provides teachers with ample opportunity to reflect upon and practice each method.

James Verrilli is the Co-Founder & Downtown Campus Principal of North Star Academy Charter School of Newark, New Jersey. Mr. Verrilli has been a history teacher and principal to Newark students for two decades. Prior to founding North Star, he began his career as a member of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps and taught at Link Community School in Newark's Central Ward.  Later he served as the school's principal for three years. As a teacher, Mr. Verrilli has designed his own multi-media software to teach the Civil Rights movement and to this day comes to class in the guise of important historical characters. For the past ten years he has been leading North Star Academy Charter School of Newark and helping it to become one of the highest performing urban schools in New Jersey.
