Conscious experience provides an immediate, compelling, and incomplete account of mental life. Perception, thinking, and action are also shaped by mental activity hidden from our conscious selves. Renowned social scientist Brian Nosek will explore the origins of unconscious bias and how it shapes our perceptions in the courtroom and the conference room. Professor Nosek will use live demonstrations as well as the results of years of research to show us how our brains really work.
About our speaker:
Brian Nosek received a Ph.D. in from YaleUniversity in 2002 and is an associate professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Virginia. In 2007, he received early career awards from the International Social Cognition Network (ISCON) and the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI).He directs Project Implicit (http://projectimplicit.net/) an Internet-based multi-university collaboration of research and education about implicit cognition – thoughts and feelings that exist outside of awareness or control.Nosek’s research interests include implicit cognition, automaticity, attitudes and beliefs, ideology, morality, identity, memory, and the interface between theory, methods, and innovation.
We will also be conducting a coat drive. The “One Warm Coat” organization collects coats for men, women and children with their goal being to provide any person in need with a warm coat, free of charge. To participate, merely bring one (or more!) warm coat(s) the evening of the dinner program and we will get them delivered to this very worthwhile project.
