Since the 1970’s, we have invested heavily in a War on Cancer. Aside from controlling environmental mediators better, cure rates remain low and the processes of cancer care are personally challenging, inefficient and costly. Technical advances that deliver easy, frequent and cheap access to cancer cells may disrupt the current management regimen. Data informed treatment decisions and surveillance in high risk states, new biomarkers used in therapeutic development, and more information to judge effectiveness of protocols in populations should result. Even without breakthroughs in pharmaceutical or other approaches, cell-based personalized medicine in cancer, driven by new tests, promises to revolutionize care.
